Why is Herberton known as "The Village in the Hills". Ron Ledlie explains

Years ago when I was young, every year the Shire Chairman of each Shire met in Cairns for a conference. It was rumoured one year that the chairman of the Cairns City Council suggested that they import monkeys from Ethiopia and train them to go up the coconut trees on the Esplanade to knock down the ripe coconuts for the tourists. The suggestion was rejected.

Cecil Holdcroft, the Chairman of the Herberton Shire, came up with a new idea. It was also rejected. The Cairns City Council chairman said to Cec Holdcroft, “to go back to the ‘Village in the Hills’.”

That’s how Herberton was known for many years.
