The Jacaranda tree (Jacaranda mimosifolia) is a native of Brazil and Bolivia. The trees seen around Herberton are offspring of the original tree which was grown from seed by John Newell one of the towns founders.

The trees flower in September and October and make a spectacular sight for locals and tourists.
